North East Bangladeshi Awards (NEBA) continues to mark Bangladesh Victory
Day annually, honouring the sacrifices made during the liberation war. The
initiation of the flag-raising event by Councillor Habib Rahman in 2019 has
fostered a significant tradition within the Bangladeshi community in Newcastle
upon Tyne. As the first Bangladeshi Lord Mayor of Newcastle, his efforts have
created a lasting impact that brings the community together in remembrance and
celebration.
On 16th December 2023, NEBA directors and members of the Bangladeshi
community gathered to commemorate the day, reflecting on the courage and
resilience of those who fought for Bangladesh's independence and the three
million martyrs who lost their lives. The anticipation for an even larger
celebration in 2024 signifies the growing importance and recognition of this
event within the community.
Such celebrations not only honour the past but also strengthen cultural ties and
promote awareness among broader society. As preparations for the 2024 Victory
Day celebration commence, it is expected to be an even more significant and
inclusive event, fostering a greater sense of unity and pride within the
Bangladeshi community in Newcastle upon Tyne.
