Celebrating Five Decades of Community Leadership and Service

London, 7 May 2025 – Hazi Alhajj Mohammad Mahmud Miah, a highly esteemed figure in the British Bangladeshi community in Newcastle upon Tyne, was honoured with an invitation to the prestigious Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, hosted by His Majesty King Charles III.

Held on Wednesday, 7 May 2025, the event recognised individuals from across the United Kingdom who have made significant and lasting contributions to their communities. Mr. Miah’s attendance marked a celebration of his more than 50 years of service in community development, entrepreneurship, and cultural preservation.

From Sylhet to Buckingham Palace: A Journey of Purpose

Arriving in the UK from Sylhet, Bangladesh in the 1960s at the age of 14, Mr. Miah settled in Newcastle during the 1970s. He quickly became a successful businessman and, more importantly, a dedicated community leader. Over the decades, he has worked tirelessly to support local mosques, madrasahs, youth initiatives, and educational programmes, while also founding and sustaining community centres that uphold Bangladeshi heritage and values.

Reflecting on the honour, Mr. Miah stated:

“This invitation is not just for me; it is a moment of pride for our entire community. I am grateful because our (British Bangladeshi) contributions have been recognised in British society. I share this honour with every immigrant from Bangladesh who has tirelessly worked to bring about positive change.”

A Nomination Rooted in Legacy

Mr. Miah was nominated for this recognition by the North East Bangladeshi Awards (NEBA), who honoured him with their prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023.

Mr. Mohammad Affsaruzzaman, Director of NEBA, commented:

“It is a matter of great pride for us to have nominated Mr. Mahmud Miah. His selfless leadership and commitment are an inspiration to the new generation. NEBA stands with individuals like him, who dedicate their lives to serving others.”

A Community’s Pride, A Nation’s Honour

Former Lord Mayor of Newcastle upon Tyne, Cllr Habib Rahman, added:

“Mahmud Miah’s achievement shows us that diligence, honesty, and service to others will always be recognised. He is a shining example of what our community stands for.”

At the Garden Party, Mr. Miah joined distinguished guests in the Palace’s majestic gardens, enjoying traditional tea, music, and the presence of the Royal Family. His attendance stands not only as a personal milestone but as a symbol of hope and inspiration for immigrant communities across the UK—demonstrating how a life of unwavering dedication to service can earn the nation’s highest recognition.
